The idea is that in Africa, the groom pays dowry for the bride to her family (in the form of cows, food ect.). The Africa bit isn't necessarily important, just opposite to the Indian tradition, which everyone is more familiar with. So the sketch starts with an explanation on that (eg. that the groom scrimped and saved to pay 100 cows), then the priest asks if there is any reason why these two should not be married and someone in the audience cries out an offer of '150 cows'! (preferably Felix style). Bidding and chaos ensues with the priest auctioneering. Conversion rates between cows and sacks of millet or margarine can become an issue. The parents accept some offer or another (Some racial stereotypes might not go astray...might...) to end the madness. |
